The Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) held their annual champagne reception yesterday, on the eve of the 85th Academy Awards ceremony. The event celebrated nominees in the music-related categories and was held in Beverly Hills at the home of composer John Cacavas and his wife Bonnie.
All of the Original Score nominees were present: John Williams (Lincoln), Dario Marianelli (Anna Karenina), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi), Thomas Newman (Skyfall) and Alexandre Desplat (Argo).
Most of the Original Song nominee were also there, including J. Ralph ("Before My Time" from Chasing Ice), Walter Murphy ("Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from Ted), Mychael Danna and Bombay Jayashri ("Pi's Lullaby" from Life of Pi), Paul Epworth ("Skyfall" from Skyfall) and Claude-Michel Schonberg, Herbert Kretzmer and Alain Boubil ("Suddenly" from Les Miserables). Adele was unable to attend, as well as Seth MacFarlane, who is hosting tonight's Oscar ceremony.
Academy Music Branch governor Charles Bernstein introduced the reception, while SCL President Dan Foliart presented the nominees to the audience, and a chance to say a few words. The winners will be announced tonight when the Academy Awards air on ABC.
