Award-winning composer Henry Jackman scores Columbia Pictures' multi-layered thriller Captain Phillips directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Greengrass and starring Academy Award winner Tom Hanks. Based on a true story, the film follows Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) as a routine cargo delivery turns into a life or death situation when his ship is hijacked by Somali pirates. The film will premier at the New York Film Festival on September 27 and open in theaters nationwide on October 11, 2013. The Captain Phillips - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available October 8 on Varèse Sarabande records.
Composer Henry Jackman displays his versatility by capturing both the intense desperation and terror of a hostage situation and the humanity of the circumstances. "The idea was for the music to support the function of the film, the themes and melody, but in no way adding extra information or manipulating the audience because of the musical content. For example, you would be tempted to reach for the traditional, heroic theme for a fight scene and Paul wanted me to avoid that like the plague. It became a challenge of minimalism," stated Jackman.
Henry Jackman's diverse educational background complements his musical diversity that has underscored his musical creations. He undertook classical training at St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School, Eton College and Oxford University. Shortly after graduating, Jackman was invited to join Hans Zimmer's team at Remote Control Studios. Jackman won an Annie Award for Wreck-It Ralph, and was nominated for Discovery of the Year by the World Soundtrack Awards. In addition to scoring this summer's hit comedy This Is the End and the animated feature Turbo, he is currently working on Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, set for a summer 2014 release.
