Grammy award winning composer Mark Isham scores the Jackie Robinson biopic, 42, in theaters April 12, 2013. Starring Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, and Christopher Meloni, 42 is written and directed by Oscar winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Academy Award for Best Screenplay, L.A. Confidential). 42 follows Jackie Robinson's recruitment and rookie season as he becomes the first African-American baseball player of the modern era. The movie's release coincides with the 66th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day (April 15th), the day Robinson first stepped onto a MLB field. 42 - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available digitally April 9, 2013, on WaterTower Music.
For 42, Mark Isham created an inspirational score with a musical progression representative of Jackie Robinson's life. To match the strength and adversity of Robinson as a character, both Isham and Helgeland agreed a unique musical voice was needed. For Robinson's theme, Isham incorporated French horns and trumpets to embody various events, including Robinson's coming of age, his relationship with his wife Rachel, and his hardships. Helgeland praised the score, saying, "The highest complement you can give to a film score is saying it stands on its own as a piece of music. Mark's score for 42 absolutely does."
A frequent collaborator with film director and Sundance Film Festival founder Robert Redford, this year marked Isham's first premiere at Sundance with The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. Reuniting with director George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor), Isham co-scored Inevitable with Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. Isham received an Oscar nomination for his score for the Redford directed film A River Runs Through It, and he has also scored for Redford's Quiz Show, Lions for Lambs, and The Conspirator. Isham's collaborative abilities have fostered long-standing relationships with several other directors, including Gary Fleder (Kiss the Girls, Don't Say a Word, The Express), for whom Isham scored the pilot of the CW's Beauty and the Beast, and Frank Darabont (The Majestic, The Mist), with whom Isham is currently working on TNT's Lost Angels (previously entitled LA Noir). Isham is currently scoring ABC's hit series Once Upon a Time, now in its second season. Other recent credits include Warrior and Dolphin Tale.
