[ScoreMaker Profile - Jason Lloyd]

Name: Jason Lloyd

Profession: Scoring Crew member

Education: B.A.—English Composition; A.A.—Audio Engineering

What is it exactly that you do? Before a session begins, my co-worker Tom Steel and I set up the chairs, music stands, headphone feeds, and microphones per the specifications of the mixer that is working on that particular show. During the session, I provide the monitor or cue mixes for the conductor and the various sections of the orchestra.

Recent films worked on: Final Destination 3, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, King Kong

Biggest films worked on: Spider-Man, Catch Me If You Can, Finding Nemo, Memoirs of a Geisha

What is your background? I was in the Air Force, then trained and worked as a Paramedic on my way to becoming a Physician, then dropped it all to pursue a career in music.

How did you get into recording music for film? I was working at A&M (now known as Henson) Recording and a Tech there told me great things about working in the film business. I joined the IATSE Local 700 Guild and was hired for a temporary position in the Audio/Visual Department at Sony Pictures. During my spare time, I would drop by the world-renowned Sony Scoring Stage and learn from the crew about the scoring process. One of the crew members left and I was at the right place at the right time.

What was the best experience you've had? Witnessing amazing creativity from icons in the music community.

Without naming names or titles, what is the worst situation you've ever had at a session, and why? I worked on a session with some legendary pop music artists where everything that could have technically gone wrong did. The talent, mixer, crew, essentially everyone in the room were beyond frustrated. In the end, the session was recorded and it all turned out fine. All's well that ends well, I suppose.

What are you working on now? Deep Sea 3D with Danny Elfman
